Upon Viewing the Painting ‘Martyr in the Catacombs’

Jules Cavé
French, 1859-1939
Martyr in the Catacombs, 1886
Oil on canvas

This precious woman now in peaceful rest,
the roaring lions now confined to stalls
- a roaring lion seeking other prey –
to devour or to sway away.

This linen sheet now covering her face,
her limp right arm now hanging by her side,
soft red petals scattered all around,
her blood now being soaked up by the ground.

Who was this daughter torn by savage beasts?
- a faithful witness standing for the truth –
now laid to rest, her brow as cold as ice
…will one day open eyes on paradise.
