The Poets: Jim Burrows - “Eve Remembers Paradise”
If you want to check out a unique poem with a wonderful voice then get a copy of MEASURE -An Annual Review of Formal Poetry (Volume II - 2007). There are many fine poems in this annual and in particular Jim Burrows’ “Eve Remembers Paradise”.
This poem speaks of Eve in the garden after she has tasted the apple and realizes Satan, the serpent, has deceived her. It’s a telling rendering of what may have gone on in Eve’s mind once she realized what she had done.
Two passages stand out in this poem:
One is when Eve ponders Eden before the Fall -
The world was bloodless then, though paradise
Was full of deadly possibility.
The second is when Eve tries to justify her actions that led to banishment from Paradise-
Her children won’t believe her when she swears
That he was beautiful, worth falling for,
This poem tackles a big subject in the form of metrical verse and accomplishes its mission in twenty-four lines. Concise, tight, visual writing that connects with a reader.
Jim Burrows poems have appeared in 32 Poems and Passages North.
MEASURE - An Annual Review of Formal Poetry is published by The University of Evansville Press.
